Gertie’s Apple Dumplings Recipe

Serves 5

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 6 medium apples
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • additional sugar, cinnamon and butter for “sprinkling and dotting”
  • cream or ice cream

Instructions:

  1. Make a syrup by combining water, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  2. Bring to boil.
  3. Add butter.
  4. Set aside.
  5. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  6. Pare, core and slice apples.
  7. Sift flour, salt and baking powder.
  8. Cut in shortening.
  9. Add milk, all at once, and stir until moistened.
  10. Roll 1/2″ thick and cut into 6″ squares.
  11. Place sliced apples on each square.
  12. Sprinkle generously with additional sugar and cinnamon.
  13. Dot with butter, and fold corners of dough to center, pinching edges together.
  14. Place in large, deep baking dish.
  15. Bake about 20 minutes.
  16. Pour syrup over, raise heat to 375 degrees and bake about 30 minutes more, or until brown.
  17. Serve warm with cream or ice cream.
