Serves 5
Ingredients:
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 cup butter
- 6 medium apples
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup milk
- additional sugar, cinnamon and butter for “sprinkling and dotting”
- cream or ice cream
Instructions:
- Make a syrup by combining water, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Bring to boil.
- Add butter.
- Set aside.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Pare, core and slice apples.
- Sift flour, salt and baking powder.
- Cut in shortening.
- Add milk, all at once, and stir until moistened.
- Roll 1/2″ thick and cut into 6″ squares.
- Place sliced apples on each square.
- Sprinkle generously with additional sugar and cinnamon.
- Dot with butter, and fold corners of dough to center, pinching edges together.
- Place in large, deep baking dish.
- Bake about 20 minutes.
- Pour syrup over, raise heat to 375 degrees and bake about 30 minutes more, or until brown.
- Serve warm with cream or ice cream.
