Serves 8
Ingredients:
- 2 eggs, separated
- 1-1/2 cups sugar
- 1-3/4 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/3 cup salad oil
- 1 cup buttermilk or milk
- 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- In a small bowl beat the egg whites until foamy.
- Add 1/2 cup of the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, while continuing to beat the whites until stiff and glossy. Set aside.
- Combine the remaining sugar, flour, salt and baking soda in a large bowl and add the oil and half the milk.
- Beat 1 minute at high speed, scraping the bowl frequently.
- Add remaining milk, egg yolks and melted chocolate, and beat an additional minute, scraping the bowl.
- Fold in the egg whites and pour into 2 greased and floured 9″ cake pans.
- Bake for 15 minutes.
Bavarian Torte
- Prepare the above cake recipe.
- When cooled, split the layers in half to get 4 layers of cake.
- Frost each layer with a cream filling or whipped cream, sprinkling each layer with 1-2 tablespoons grated, unsweetened chocolate.
- When assembled, refrigerate at least 8 hours before serving.
