Halvah is well known in Greece as an unleavened cake sweetened with honey and nuts. This recipe was modernized by a Greek American girl.

Ingredients:
Cake
- 1/2 pound butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 5 large eggs, separated
- 1/2 cup ground walnuts
- 1-3/4 cups Pillsbury farina
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Topping
- 3 cups water
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup walnuts for garnish
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Cream butter until soft and fluffy.
- Add 3/4 cup sugar and continue creaming.
- Add 5 egg yolks, blending well.
- Mix in 1/2 cup ground walnuts.
- Alternately add dry ingredients (farina, flour and baking powder) with milk. Add vanilla.
- Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
- Turn into a well-greased 9″x13″ pan and bake for 30 minutes.
- While cake is baking, combine water, 2 cups sugar and lemon juice and heat on stove until sugar is dissolved.
- Pour this hot syrup over the hot halvah.
- Decorate with walnuts.
- Return to oven for 5 minutes more.
- Cut into small squares to serve.
